Lidocaine is a general local antiarrhythmic and local anesthetic drug. It is the first amino amide-type local anesthetic used to abate burning, itching and pain from skin infections. It is also known as Xylocaine or lignocaine. It was synthesized in 1943 by Swedish chemist, Nils Lofgren.
