Some claim that it was John Davis of America who first landed on the South Pole but the claim is doubted by many historians. James Cook was the first person to circumnavigate the Antarctica. In the winter of 1821, a group of 11 Englishmen aboard the ship Lord Melville, became the first humans to spend the winter season there. According to another theory, adventurist, Robert E. Peary made it to the South Pole after 18 years of continuous efforts. He considered the South Pole to be the exact point where the sun and the stars moved in horizontal circles.
