The proton is a subatomic particle with a positive electric charge of 1 elementary charge. It is composed of two up quarks and one down quark. It was discovered by Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, a physicist and British chemist in 1918. He was known as the father of nuclear physics.
