Iodine is a chemical element. It is denoted by the chemical symbol of I and its atomic number is 53. It is placed in the halogens group. Bernard Courtois, a French chemist discovered iodine in the year 1811. Later, Sir Humphry Davy and Joseph Gay-Lussac worked individually on iodine and proved that it was a new element.
