Halothane is a colorless, mellow- smelling general inhalational anesthetic. It contains a bromine atom. It was first synthesized in 1951 by prominent British chemist, Charles Walter Suckling. He first examines halothane’s anaesthetic action by experimenting on mealworms and houseflies while working at the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Later in 1956, M. Johnstone used it clinically first time.
